Launceston

Tasmania has a reputation for beautiful natural landscapes, superb produce, award-winning wines and an abundance of wildlife, including mammals that are rare or extinct on the mainland.

Launceston blends the relaxing charm and community of a small city with the modern facilities, entertainment options and accommodation of a much larger metropolis. Founded in 1806, it is Australia’s third-oldest city. Launceston’s rich and colourful history is on display in its beautiful old buildings and streetscapes, which date from early Colonial and convict times through the Georgian and Victorian eras. These beautiful buildings continue to thrive with the vibrancy of Launceston’s commercial and social networks, with a variety of music and arts festivals, and many excellent restaurants and cafes. It is centred at the confluence of two great rivers, the North Esk and the South Esk, and at the head of the Tamar estuary.

Cataract Gorge, only 15 minutes’ walk from the CBD, is the natural gem of Launceston, with dolerite cliffs, gardens, public pool and the South Esk River. Native vegetation is predominantly sheoak forest and grassy dry eucalypt forest, with a special patch of riparian vegetation right next to the pool. The Gorge is a threatened species hotspot, and has additional diversity within over 600 ha of connected reserve. Bennetts wallabies, Tasmanian pademelons, brushtail possums and even spotted-tailed quolls may be seen here in the evenings.
